The Child Development Center (CDC) at Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC) provides accredited early childhood education for children between the ages of six weeks and kindergarten.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision prepares and implements Child Development Center (CDC) activities in alignment with UGMTC’s mission and values. Works closely with the Program Director, Teachers and Administrative Assistant in implementing activities designed to develop a range of social, cognitive, and/or motor skills for individual and/or groups of children at the Child Development Center (CDC).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
At the direction of the Program Director, carries out established CDC processes, policies and procedures in alignment with UGMTC’s mission and values.
Creates a welcoming and safe environment for children and their families. De-escalates and resolves issues that occur between children.
Prepares and implements learning and skills development plans for targeted population, on a weekly and/or monthly basis at the direction of the classroom teachers.
Assists teachers in preparing and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and learning opportunities that meets the spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of children according to pre-established protocols and individual needs.
Supervises and guides children in the performance of developmentally appropriate activities.
Assesses flow of center and classrooms, evaluates the needs of the staff and students and proactively provides assistance and balance.
Supports or leads in classroom as needed in the absence of regular classroom teacher.
Understands MNDHS Rule 3 and completes all required related training and in-services.
Instructs and monitors children in the development of proper health care and hygiene skills; as appropriate to position, performs nutrition and hygiene procedures as necessary for children too young or otherwise unable to provide for themselves.
Instructs and monitors children in the proper and safe use of facilities and equipment.
Prepares and supervises meals and snacks for children.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with all policies and state and federal laws.
Maintains open and cooperative communication with parents and families that encourages their involvement in the program and supports the child's family relationships.
Records all behavior incidents that occur and reports them to Program Director.
Remains flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of the center including work schedules and work assignments.
Understands Mandated Reporting policies and procedures and attends regular training.
Performs routine cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of center facilities and equipment.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Meet the Teacher Assistant qualifications as designated by DHS Rule 3:
High school diploma or General Education Development (GED)
2,080 hours working as an aide or student intern and has 12-quarter credits.
Child Development Associate credential or bachelor’s degree in early childhood development or education preferred.
Experience working with children with special needs, learning disabilities and IEPs.
Experience understanding Trauma Informed Care.
Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification required within 90 days of hire date. • Two hours of a Child Development Course in Knowledge and Competency Area I: Child Development and Learning, within 90 days of hire.
Must be available to work Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and flexible shifts as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of child development theory and practice, accreditation and certification requirements, standards, MNDHS Rule 3 and other relevant federal, state and local regulations, and basic food preparation and standards.
Demonstrate excellent self-awareness, judgment, and professional boundaries in interactions with children, staff, parents, and the community.
Knowledge of issues affecting people experiencing mental health issues, homelessness, poverty, addiction and underserved or at-risk communities.
Work with a wide range of constituencies within a cultural, ethnic, racial, and socio-economically diverse community.
Conflict prevention, de-escalation and resolution skills.
Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to provide great customer service.
Read, understand and follow safety and other specific instructions and procedures.
Work with staff and agencies in the coordination of children support activities.
Implement program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
Accurately maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT
Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 40 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (approximately 50%) of job.
Work requires pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching, stooping, walking, twisting, carrying, and other physical activities.
